Cinepaint, antes conocido como FIlm GIMP, se distribuye bajo la licencia GNU General Public License. Entre los años 1999 y 2001, gozó de cierto éxito como una de las primeras herramientas de código abierto desarrolladas para efectos visuales de imágenes en movimiento y trabajos de animación en el ámbito de la producción cinematográfica. Fue desarrollado basándose en la versión 1.0.4 de GIMP. El objetivo del programa, o conjunto de programas, es que sirva para editar fotogramas secuenciales en operaciones como eliminar ruido, retocar animaciones 3D y pequeños cambios en el color y saturación de la imagen. Opera con formatos de archivo de alta fidelidad como, 16-bit TIFF y OpenEXR, además de formatos convencionales como JPEG y PNG. Permite mayor fidelidad de color que las herramientas comunes de pintura. It is free software under the GPL-2.0-or-later. The mainline GIMP project later added high bit depths in GIMP 2.9.2, released November 2015. The main reason for this adoption over mainline GIMP was its support for high bit depths (greater than 8-bits per channel) which can be required for film work. It enjoyed some success as one of the earliest open source tools developed for feature motion picture visual effects and animation work. It is a fork of version 1.0.4 of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). CinePaint is a free and open source computer program for painting and retouching bitmap frames of films.Neben Rhythm & Hues tragen die Studios von Sony Pictures Imageworks, ILM und DreamWorks Quelltext zu dem Projekt bei. Rohdatenformate von Digitalkameras werden mittels Dcraw eingelesen, alternativ gibt es ein UFRaw-Plugin. Ab Version 0.20 ist es möglich, HDR-Bilder aus normalen Belichtungsreihen berechnen zu lassen. Durch das integrierte Color Management können CMYK- und CIE*Lab-Bilder angezeigt und korrigiert werden.
Dadurch wird dieses Programm neben seinem eigentlichen Einsatzzweck in der Filmbranche auch für Fotografen interessant.

Zudem unterstützt es Farbtiefen von 8, 16 und 32 Bit (HDR) pro Farbkanal – weit mehr, als auf einem normalen Monitor angezeigt werden können. CinePaint erlaubt die Bearbeitung ganzer Bilderserien in einem Vorgang.
